Event to be hosted in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 24 to 31 August
Rowing Australia today announced the Australian Rowing Team that will compete at this year’s World Rowing Championships to be held from 24 to 31 August in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Australia will have 19 boats, including three Para-rowing crews, at this year’s event and the team includes three reigning World Champion crews.
Kimberley Crow will return to this year’s World Championships to defend the Women’s Single Scull title she won last year in South Korea, while Erik Horrie (Arms and Shoulders Men’s Single Scull), Kathryn Ross and Gavin Bellis (Trunk and Arms Mixed Double Scull) will also be on the hunt to retain the titles they claimed last year.
Today’s announcement comes off the back of a review by the Australian Rowing Team selectors after the team’s recent performance at World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne and sees Western Australia’s Perry Ward take a seat in the Lightweight Men’s Single for the World Championships.
Along with Ward, Victorians Lucy Stephan and Charlotte Sutherland join the revised World Championships team, with the duo set to compete in the Women’s Coxless Pair on The Bosbaan.
The Para-Rowing Australian Rowing Team will also see an international debut at the World Rowing Championships, when Kathleen Murdoch and Jeremy McGrath compete in the Legs, Trunks and Arms Double Scull event.
National Performance Director, Chris O’Brien, said: “Today’s announcement sees a small revision in the team after the recent World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne. We are confident that the crews selected will further progress our endeavours to achieve medal outcomes in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.”
