Australian Rowing Team off to winning start at World Rowing Cup II

The Australian Rowing Team got off to a winning start at World Rowing Cup II in Varese, Italy last night when Erik Horrie, Kathryn Ross and Gavin Bellis won their respective heats in the para-rowing aspect of the competition.

Horrie, the current World Champion in the Arms and Shoulders Men’s Single Scull, cruised into today’s semi-finals. Horrie had the lead from the half way point, followed by Roman Polianskyi of Ukraine and Netherlands’ Alexander van Holk. The order remained the same through the race, with Horrie recording the fastest qualifying time overall. Horrie’s semi-final will either be at 17:38 or 17:46 local time today (Friday).

Fellow World Champions, Kathryn Ross and Gavin Bellis, rowed to victory in the Trunk and Arms Mixed Double Scull. The duo needed a top two finish to confirm an automatic place in Saturday’s final and that they did with the fastest qualify time in the heats to boot. The Canberra-based crew will race their final at 16:11 local time (00:11 AEST) on Saturday in Italy.

Today sees the non-para competition get underway with 13 Australian crews set to race. World Rowing will have their ‘Live Tracker’ available as well as their audio commentary so head to www.worldrowing.com for more information.

Details of the times of the Australian crews racing are listed below. Dependent on where crews finish in these races, they may race again later on Friday – please check World Rowing’s site for more information.
