Not content with his illustrious career where he has taken all before him and won gold at World, Commonwealth and Olympic levels, Peter Antonie is getting into the action to raise money for The Smith Family by joining The Pirates Sporting Club team for the upcoming 210km Around the Bay ride. Not content with just completing AtB, The Pirates, and now Antonie, will be riding the 210km’s on the iconic Melbourne Bike Share ‘Blue Bikes’. And like the ubiquitous steak knives on the home shopping network, there is more, they are rowing surf boats the 12km’s across the heads from Queenscliff to Sorrento rather than catching the ferry.
When talking about this crazy project, Antonie said “I thought the step up from lightweight to heavyweight for the Barcelona Olympics was crazy….the Pirates however have redefined crazy with #project222 and I just had to be part of it. This is a group of regular guys with jobs and families who are undertaking this event to raise money for the kids at The Smith Family. It’s a great cause, and an exciting event!”
210 Blue Bike + 12 Surf Boat = 222….beautiful in simplicity, whilst mad in theory!
222 is also the number of Smith Family kids the Pirates are looking to support for 12 months. The Smith Family are looking raise $1.2m in total from the estimated 12,000 riders this year. For perspective, the 27 Pirates alone are targeting an amount of $130,000, so all support from the Rowing community would be warmly welcomed.
