National Selection Trial 2 begins in Penrith

Australia’s rowers will once again descend upon Penrith, New South Wales this week as National Selection Trail #2 takes place on 29 and 30 January. This event forms part of the National Selection Trials for athletes nominating for the 2016 Senior Australian Rowing Team.

Athletes who made it through the first selection process (completed in December 2015), will take part in a time trial at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). The time trial and small boat racing will see athletes compete in small boats in a time trial lasting 3.8 kilometres along with a side-by-side two kilometre competition as part of the Rowing NSW small boats regatta. A list of those athletes attending the trial can be seen here.

Once this time trial is completed, the 100 athletes will then compete in small boats in February’s New South Wales State Championships and subject to performance will then progress to to the stand alone final Australian Rowing Team trials (including para-rowing) where selectors will be reviewing the standard and potential combinations.  This final selection event is to be held in Penrith, once again at SIRC, from 15 to 19 February.

Post-February’s National Selection Trials selectors will be looking to name the Australian Rowing Team for 2016 that will compete at World Rowing Cups 2 and 3 (including para-rowing), while also potentially selecting crews for late qualification to the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Rio Games.

Subject to crews being selected for late qualification, athletes will travel to Qualification Regattas as follows – crews aiming for the 2016 Olympic Games will compete in Lucerne, Switzerland (22 to 25 May) while crews aiming for the 2016 Paralympic Games will compete in Gavirate, Italy (18-24 April).

Crews for Australian Olympic Team and the Australian Paralympic Team will be announced by the Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Paralympic Committee at a later date.
