Paralympic rowing begins tonight

Australia’s para-rowers will take to the waters of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas this evening to compete in the first day of the 2016 Paralympic Games regatta.

First up will be Erik Horrie in the Arms and Shoulders Men’s Single Sculls at 09:30 Local Time (22:30 AEST). Drawn in Lane Five, Horrie will take on crews from Lithuania, Great Britain, Germany, South Korea and Italy. Horrie will need a first place finish to automatically make the A-Final, otherwise he’ll contest the repechage the next day.

Next on the water for Australia is reigning World Champions in the Trunk and Arms Mixed Double Sculls, Kathryn Ross and Gavin Bellis. The partnership of Ross and Bellis are drawn in Lane Three and will take on crews from Latvia, Great Britain, China, Ukraine and Israel. Their race will be at 10:10 Local Time (23:10 AEST) and top place will automatically make the A-Final, while the remainder will contest the repechage.

The LTA Mixed Coxed Four will race at 10:30 Local Time (23:30 AEST) and are drawn in Lane One. The crew of Davinia Lefroy, Brock Ingram, Jeremy McGrath, Kate Murdoch and Jo Burnand require a top place finish to avoid the repechage on Saturday. The Australians are up against crews from South Africa, Zimbabwe, reigning World Champions Great Britain, China and Italy.
