- Rowing trio of Jack Hargreaves, Josh Hicks, Spencer Turrin announced joint winners of the Arrowfield Stud Male Athlete of the Year award
- The NSWIS Rowing Program named the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Program of the Year
The NSWIS rowing trio of Jack Hargreaves, Josh Hicks and Spencer Turrin have claimed the top men’s honour at the 2017 NSW Institute of Sport Awards after being named joint-winners of the Arrowfield Stud Male Athlete of the Year award.
Hargreaves, Hicks and Turrin were all part of the Australian crew that won gold in the men’s coxless four at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, ending Australia’s 26-year wait for gold in the event.
Their world championship triumph was complemented by gold in the same event during the world cup, with all three also appearing in the men’s eight crew that won silver during the world cup.
“Twenty-six years ago, that takes us back to 1991, that’s the year in which Spencer and Josh were born, and two years before Jack and the fourth team-member Alex Hill were born,” explained Lizzi Chapman, manager of the NSWIS Rowing program.
“So that in a nutshell means in their lifetime no Australian men have won that world championship, so it’s an amazing feat from them.”
The trio’s success, together with world championship gold from para-rower Erik Horrie, and the establishment of the women’s rowing national training centre in NSW, helped towards the NSWIS Rowing Program being named the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Program of the Year to cap an excellent night for the sport.
“A very exciting evening (for rowing), and a huge thanks to all of the team at NSWIS, the athletes and the clubs that have contributed to that success. We’re really proud,” Chapman said.
