Rowing Australia today announced that Don McLachlan will coach Australia’s Lightweight Men’s Double Scull (and reserve) and the Women’s Quadruple Scull for this year’s World Rowing Cups 2 and 3. The Sydney University Boat Club Head Coach will temporarily relocate to Canberra to work with the crews at the Reinhold Batschi Men’s National Training Centre (RBMNTC) after the 2019 Aon Sydney International Rowing Regatta.
Rowing Australia Performance Director, Bernard Savage said, “We’re delighted to have Don join our coaching staff for the World Rowing Cups and I’d like to thank Sydney University Boat Club for supporting and collaborating with us for this coaching appointment. With the large number of crews set to race at this year’s World Rowing Cups we felt the extra coaching resource was necessary to ensure the right coaching balance across the Team.
“The appointment of Don to the two crews recognises the work he has undertaken to date in preparing athletes selected to these boats: Hamish Parry, Leon Chambers, Fiona Ewing and Rowena Meredith, for the recent National Selection Trials. These athletes will be joined at the RBMNTC by Sean Murphy, Cara Grzeskowiak and Katrina Bateman. This appointment provides good continuity for these athletes, and also supports a better coaching balance across the Team. The decision to base the Women’s Quad in Canberra with the men for preparation is based around providing the best logistical and multi-gender support for the group.
“The Women’s Quadruple Scull and Don will be in regular contact with Women’s Head Coach John Keogh, while the crew will also connect with the Women’s Team on regular occasions in Penrith, including at our two simulation regattas planned for May and June this year.”
