Rowing Australia announces the Dr Stephen Hinchy Memorial Trophy

Trophy to be awarded yearly to the Open Men’s Single Scull Championships of Australia, honouring the late Dr Stephen Hinchy OAM

Rowing Australia (RA) is pleased to announce that the winner of the Open Men’s Single Scull Championship of Australia will henceforth be awarded the Dr Stephen Hinchy Memorial Trophy. The RA Board last month approved a proposal for the creation of the trophy to honour the recently deceased RA Life Member and former Australian Rowing Team doctor, Dr Stephen Hinchy.

The trophy, which has been donated by fellow RA Life Member, Andrew Guerin, will be presented, in perpetuity, at the Australian Rowing Championships, beginning in 2021, while fellow RA Life Member, Ray Ebert, formally announced the trophy at a memorial service held for Dr Hinchy in Queensland on Sunday 1 November.

Dr Hinchy passed away on 8 July 2020 after a short illness and is considered one of the greatest contributors to the sport of rowing in Australia. He was made a Life Member of RA in 2000, was the 2015 Volunteer of the Year and served the sport of rowing in Australia in many capacities, including as President of RA, National Team Doctor and also a long-standing umpire working locally, nationally and internationally.

Rowing Australia President, Rob Scott said, “Stephen contributed so much to the sport of rowing in Australia, it is only fitting that his legacy is honoured yearly with the presentation of the Dr Stephen Hinchy Memorial Trophy at the Australia Rowing Championships.”

In addition to the trophy being presented, the yearly recipient will also be awarded a commemorative medal, to keep, to recognise their victory.

Funds are currently being raised to allow for the awarding of the yearly medal and also for the creation of a suitable base for the trophy, using celery pine donated by the rowing community in Tasmania. For more details on how you can donate towards the forging of the medals and making of the trophy base, please email Alice Evans on [email protected]

Finally, Rowing Queensland and Commercial Rowing Club have commissioned and published ‘Steve Hinchy – A True Rowing Friend’, a tribute to Dr Hinchy filled with rich memories and insights into the character and nature of an exceptional Australian and selfless volunteer to the sport of rowing. The book is available via Rowing Queensland at the price of $50.00 plus postage, to request your copy, please order by emailing [email protected]
