2022 Underage Australian Rowing Teams Announced

Rowing Australia announced today the 2022 Australian Under 19, Under 21 and Under 23 Rowing Teams that will represent Australia internationally in 2022. This year the Under 23 and Under 19 Australian Rowing Teams will compete at a combined World Championship event in Varese, Italy from 25 – 31 July. The Under 21 crews will compete in the Trans-Tasman regatta from 16-18 June at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. 2022 will be the first time since 2019 that Australia has been represented at an underage level internationally.

The selected athletes competed at the National Underage Selection Trials, conducted at Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra from 1 – 8 May 2022. It was an enormous week of trialling and racing which saw approximately 400 athletes compete, with all states and territories represented. Of note, there were huge entries in the Interstate Schools Pathways Eights event where an unprecedented 24 crews (13 female and 11 male) competed. All Interstate Schools Pathway Eight crews attended an event hosted by the Rowing Australia Pathway Team at the Men’s National Training Centre with Rhett Ayliffe, Men’s NTC Head Coach and Olympic Gold Medallists, Jack Hargreaves OAM and Spencer Turrin OAM providing tours throughout the facility.

Deputy Performance Director, Jaime Fernandez OLY, highlighted the importance of the Trials:

“It cannot be underestimated the significant challenges and hurdles that our young athletes, their coaches and families have had to overcome over the past two years to get to these Trials. It is wonderful that we can now look to send crews internationally to compete once again.”

Jaime added, “A massive thank you to Radford College for once again supporting the Rowing Australia Underage Trials with the use of their Boat Shed and facilities. We would also like to thank Rowing ACT and the local rowing community for allowing us to conduct the Trials in Canberra and assisting us in the efficient and effective running of the Trials with as little disruption as possible.”

Congratulations to all athletes that trialled and to those that were ultimately selected to the 2022 Australian Rowing Team.
