Winning Performances on the Final Day of the Gavirate International Para-Rowing Regatta

The last day didn’t disappoint for the Australian Rowing Team in either race conditions or results.

Racing down the course first for Australia was in fact an unusual international composite in the PR2 Mix2x with Kat Ross doubling up with Corne de Koning from The Netherlands. Despite having never rowed together before they rowed a strong race to take the Gold. Kat then had a short amount of time to recover before rowing up to the start again to race in the PR2 W1x, where she won another medal – this time the Silver Medal.

Kat said: “The races were pretty tough. The weather was quite hot so it was challenging coming from the Australian winter, but it was amazing to be in Italy in beautiful [rowing] conditions.”

Kat continued: “It was a great experience to row with another nation [The Netherlands], I learnt a lot and had a great time.”

The Silver Medal winning-performance from the PR3 Mix4+ of Thomas Birtwhistle, Jessica Gallagher, Alexandra Viney, Nicholas Neales and Cox Teesaan Koo was a great outcome for this new-look combination.

Al Viney spoke about the experience at the Regatta: “We kept the intensity up across the four races, which were back-to-back. It was great seeing where we sat amongst the world each day and we were collaborating together more each time.”

The PR3 M2- of Thomas Birtwhistle and Nicholas Neales raced for the eighth, and last time, over the three-day Regatta on the Sunday. They rowed a strong race and produced a Gold Medal winning-performance, to take the last medal of the Regatta for the Australian Rowing Team.

Thomas Birthwhistle spoke about his experience: “We really progressed with the pair throughout the Regatta, our steering line was better, Nick and I were matching up better and we kept improving.”

After three days of racing, the Australian Rowing Team won two Gold Medals, four Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals.

Paul Thompson MBE, Performance Director provided his overview on the Regatta:

“It’s been great to test the waters with the crews here in Gavirate. There have been some good races, medals and learnings for our athletes to take into their training in the lead up to World Cup I later this month.”

The team will be competing again in two weeks’ time at World Cup I in Belgrade, Serbia which will run from 27 – 29 May.
