Aldersey and Edmunds confirmed in Women’s Double Scull for 2017 World Rowing Cups

Victorian James Rook confirmed as Men’s Eight coxswain

Rowing Australia today confirmed the following athletes and crews for the 2017 Australian Rowing Team that is set to compete at the 2017 World Rowing Cups 2 and 3 later this year. This is an update to the previous announcement of 21 March 2017.

After further trialling at the 2017 Sydney International Rowing Regatta last week, Rio Olympians Madeleine Edmunds and Olympia Aldersey will combine to race in the Women’s Double Scull.

Aldersey is a World Championship medallist in this event, having won bronze at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, while Edmunds has had World Rowing Cup success in the Women’s Quadruple Scull, having won multiple medals as the stroke of Australia’s Women’s Quadruple Scull over the last few years.

Performance Director, Bernard Savage, commented on the selection of the Women’s Double Scull saying: “The selectors, in accordance with the Selection Policy and Event Requirements and with the approval of the High Performance Commission, determined to adjust the Benchmark Performance Standards based on the conditions during the Australian National Championships. The Women’s Double Scull is selected to the Australian Rowing Team and is considered to have met the adjusted Performance Benchmark Time.

“We hope the creation of the two crews has helped to provide further clarity for those women involved in the sculling squad at the Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre.”

The Women’s Quadruple Scull has had three of its crew confirmed, with further trialling to take place for the fourth seat. Confirmed in the boat for World Rowing Cups 2 and 3 are Rio Olympian Genevieve Horton, along with Caitlin Cronin and Rowena Meredith. Leah Saunders, Fiona Ewing and Georgie Gotch will be trialling for the remaining seat, with a further announcement in due course.

The Men’s Eight is now confirmed, after the withdrawal of Adam Bakker and Harley Moore from the squad. The confirmed crew is as follows, Timothy Masters, Angus Moore, Alexander Purnell, Campbell Watts, Angus Widdicombe, Darcy Wruck, Nathan Bowden, Benjamin Coombs, with Simon Keenan now named as reserve.

With the conclusion of the Australian National Championships, the selectors have also selected their coxswain for the Men’s Eight to compete at the World Rowing Cups. James Rook from Mercantile Rowing Club in Victoria will cox the crew in Poland and Switzerland this year.

World Rowing Cup 2 will take place in Poznan, Poland from 15 to 18 June, while World Rowing Cup 3 will take place in Lucerne, Switzerland, from 7 to 9 July 2017.
