Jack Cleary's parents owned a dance school in Joondalup, Western Australia and the Perth-native was an active dancer until the age of 13 when he suffered a broken knee. The young Cleary began rowing as part of his rehab from the injury when he joined Trinity College in Perth in 2008. Cleary has raced internationally at the underage level in all heavyweight disciplines of strokeside, bowside and sculling, at both the Junior and Under 23 level. In 2014, Cleary began his studies at UC Berkeley, he majored in Economics and Sociology while also undertaking a rowing scholarship. In 2016, he was selected into the U23 Men's Coxed Four alongside Henry Youl, Sam Hardy, Texas Lawton and Louis Copolov, the crew raced at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, winning a bronze medal. 2021 saw him make his senior Australian Rowing Team debut, racing in the Australian Men's Quadruple Scull that won Bronze at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In 2022, Cleary moved into the Men's Double with Caleb Antill and had a dead heat to share the Bronze Medal at World Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland. At the 2022 World Championships held in Račice, Czech Republic, Cleary was selected as the ART Men’s Single Scull representative.He qualified for the B Final and finished in sixth place.
