There is a history of coxing in the Sim household. Stuart is in fact a third generation coxswain, with his father Michael (a coxswain for Australia in 1980 and also a Head of the River winner in 1978) and his late grandfather, Bob, also coxing (the latter winning the Head of the River in 1941). All three Sim men attended Scotch College in Victoria. Stuart is a two time USA IRA National Champion in the Varsity Eight at the University of Washington, where he graduated as a Finance Major. Since graduating he has helped grow a start up company in Seattle as Head of Sales and Marketing, while also commentated rowing at Head of the Charles and Windemere Cup. Stuart joined the Reinhold Batschi Men's NTC, in Canberra, for the 2020 season.
