Tom first started Rowing at the age of 16. He attended St. Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill located in Sydney, NSW. He has a Masters degree in Education specialising in Secondary Education. Together with Nikki Ayers, James Talbot, Alexandra Viney and Coxswain Renae Domaschenz, Tom was selected to compete in the Mixed Coxed Four (PR3 Mix 4+) at the rescheduled 2020 Paralympic Games. The crew made the A-Final and finished in 4th place. At the 2022 Rowing World Cup1 (Belgrade, Serbia), he was part of the PR3 Mixed Coxed Four that finished second to Great Britain in the A-Final. At the 2022 World Championships held in Račice, Czech Republic, Birtwhistle teamed up with Alexandra Viney, Jessica Gallagher, James Talbot, and Coxswain: Teesan Koo in the PR3 Mixed Coxed Four. The crew qualified for the A Final, and finished in fourth place.
