Australia continues to lead in Trans-Tasman Regatta

The second day of the first leg of the Trans-Tasman Regatta has seen Australia continue its marginal lead over New Zealand in the points score. At the close of day two, Australia are on 121 points and New Zealand on 119 points.

The second day of the regatta saw the teams step into Fours and Quadruple Sculls, while the reserves stepped into the Lightweight Mixed Double Sculls for racing.

In the morning’s heat and in the afternoon final, New Zealand’s Women’s Four of Danika Caton, Claudia Mecchia, Grace Holland and Jessica Turfrey took the win over Australia’s Alexandra Findlay, Ella Bramwell, Skyla Froebel and Kirstie Green. Meanwhile in the men’s equivalent, it was Australia who took victory in both the heat and the final.

Alex Nichol, Jackson Kench, Paddy Holt and Nick Lavery beat their New Zealand counterparts in the heat by a five second margin, and when it came to the final, New Zealand’s Joseph Graham, Cameron Donald, Blake Bradshaw and Angus Shotter crossed the line 4.92 seconds behind the boys in Green and Gold.

In the Quadruple Sculls heats, the New Zealand women proved victorious, while it was the Australian men who won their heat. The afternoon’s finals saw New Zealand’s Shannon Cox, Anna MacQuarrie, Justine Hobbs and Lily Butler crossed the line 2.99 seconds ahead of Australia’s Celia Cowan, Michaela Franz, Charlotte Wirtz and Olivia Bartram.

In the Men’s Quadruple Scull final, Nathan Kennedy, Rohan James, Matt Murray and Alex Grzeskowiak won in a time of 6 minutes 11 seconds, beating New Zealand’s James Brott, Nathan Luff, TK McLaren-Taplin and Jordon Gasson but 2.16 seconds.

In the Lightweight Mixed Double Sculls, New Zealand’s Jack Castle partnered up with Kaylin Wren, while for Australia, Portia Bennett partnered up with Connor Ryan. The heats saw New Zealand take the win, but it was a Trans-Tasman switch for the final, with Bennett and Ryan winning in a time of 7 minutes 20 seconds.

Points for racing will be awarded in the finals as follows:

  1. 1st – 6 points, 2nd – 4 points, 3rd – 2 points and 4th – 1 point for –W1x, M1x, W2- and M2-.
  2. 1st – 6 points and 2nd – 4 points for LW2x, LM2x, W4-, M4-, W4x, M4x, W8+ and M8+.
  3. 1st – 2 points and 2nd – 1 point for LW1x, LM1x and MixL2x.Medals will be awarded to the first-placed boat in each category.
