From Tasmania, Deanie de Boer is very passionate about Lake Barrington and has thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at her home course for the past two Australian National Championships.
Since Deanie’s son Roelf joined Mersey Rowing Club three years ago, she has gained an understanding into how much goes on behind the scenes to make these events happen. This inspired her to first volunteer at ARC25, and she has continued with Tasmania’s state club regattas ever since. Helping out wherever needed Deanie would typically be found either assisting with timing at the finish tower, in the café or anywhere in between.
At ARC26 Deanie has been assisting at the welcome gates and the information booth while also managing spectator services. As just one of the bubbly, welcoming faces on ticket scanning, Deanie has enjoyed the social side of the front gate, getting to know many families, and having the opportunity to greet the Rowsellas.
While Deanie loves volunteering at Tasmanian regattas, she particularly enjoys the national events as she describes them to be an incredible way to meet new people from other states who have different experiences and perspectives with rowing.
“You get to learn a lot about the process of rowing. Some of these families have been in rowing scene for a lot longer than we have, and they have been able to give some great advice.”
As a strong advocate for volunteering, Deanie believes it plays a crucial role in making rowing a success.
“Everybody loves to do sport, but they don’t realise that in the background there is a lot that goes in to putting it together. If we didn’t have people volunteer, then we would not have races.”
Deanie is very generous in the time she donates to Rowing Tasmania and Rowing Australia, while also being a supportive mum, with her favourite moment of her week being watching Roelf cross the line first in his heat of the Under 19 Men’s Pair.
