Success at the Commonwealth Rowing Association Beach Sprint Championships

For the 2022 Commonwealth Rowing Association (CRA) Beach Sprint Championships held at Walvis Bay, Namibia from 2 to 4 December 2022 Marcus Della Marta from UTS Rowing Club, and the University of Queensland Rowing Club’s Elizabeth Newell and Morgan Hodgson – were invited to represent Australia.  The regatta was hosted by the CRA in conjunction with the Namibian Canoe and Rowing Federation at Walvis Bay, Namibia from 2 to 4 December 2022.

Newell won a Gold Medal in the Women’s Solo and teamed up with Hodgson in the Mixed Scull to finish in fourth place.  Della Marta, who is no stranger to wearing the green and gold zoot suit – as he raced in the Under 23 Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the World Under 23 Championships – won a Bronze Medal in the Men’s Solo.

Post-regatta, Sarah Cook OLY, Chief Operating Officer said, “The results that our athletes achieved at the recent Commonwealth Rowing Association Beach Sprints Championships were amazing.   Well done to Lizzie, Morgan, and Marcus.”

Cook further commented and said, “Coastal Rowing and Beach Sprints is such an exciting emerging discipline of the sport. We look forward to its inclusion in the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games in Bali, the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, and of course the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. As momentum builds, we look forward to attracting more athletes from diverse backgrounds and pathways to the sport of Rowing. At Rowing Australia, we’re excited to once again be co-delivering the Australian Coastal Rowing & Beach Sprint Championships in July in Queensland with Rowing Queensland, which will also be the inaugural Oceania Championships for the discipline. Coastal Rowing and Beach Sprints have just caught its first big wave and we are only just getting started.”
