Rowing was first included on the Paralympic program at the 2008 Beijing Games. Open to both male and female athletes, there were four boat classes with all races being competed over 1000m.
At Beijing, Australia was represented in the trunk and arms mixed double sculls by Kathryn Ross and John Maclean. The talented duo won the silver medal, missing out on gold by the tiniest of fractions – just 0.08 seconds to the hometown crew from China. Ross returned to the Paralympics in 2012 with new partner Gavin Bellis but the pair were left disappointed after missing the podium to finish fifth. Erik Horrie made his Paralympic debut in London, winning silver in the arms and shoulders single scull.
