The Australian Men’s Quadruple Sculls crew is ready to step up and perform at another level in their World Rowing Championship Semi-Final in Shanghai on Tuesday morning.
The crew of Nicholas Blackman, Johnson Daubney, Jackson Free and Alexander Rossi has taken in the lessons learned from their Heat on Sunday.
The Men’s Quad Sculls, which finished fourth in the fastest of three Heats, is one of three crews to race for Australia on day three of the regatta.
The others are the Women’s Pairs of Taylor Caudle and Eleanor Price in the Semis, and the Men’s Pair of Fraser Miscamble and Nicholas Smith the D-Final of their event.
Men’s Quad Sculls coach David Fraumano said the crew is now in a "finals" mindset.
Australia has drawn Lane 6 for their Semi against [in order from Lane 1 to 5] Romania, France, Ukraine, Italy and the USA. They need to finish top three to make the A-Final.
“We got some great learning out of the Heat,” Fraumano said after the crew trained on Monday.
“Sunday’s Heat was their first race since July, so it was a bit of a baptism of fire for them being in the fastest heat.
“But we wouldn't have had it any other way because we've got to see the best that the rest of the world's got to offer.
“We've had a slight change in mindset from our Heat to the Semi-Final.
“We're sort of thinking of it like an AFL fan … we've been through the Qualifying Final and we're now into the ‘prelims’. So, the intensity's going to lift a bit.
“We've got a lot of confidence in our technical frameworks. Now it's about challenging those frameworks and seeing how much juice we can put into it.”
