Rowing Australia proudly celebrates the election of Duncan Free OAM to the Board of Directors of Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA). This significant appointment was confirmed at Wednesday’s CGA Annual General Meeting after a nomination by Rowing Australia.
Duncan will contribute his extensive experience and insight to the CGA Board for a term through 2028.
Duncan is a renowned figure in the rowing world, with an illustrious career that includes participation in four Olympic Games and earning a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Men’s Coxless Pair alongside Drew Ginn.
A two-time world champion, Duncan also represented Australia at four World Rowing Championships in both scull and sweep events. His prowess in rowing was further showcased when he won the prestigious Diamond Challenge Sculls at the 2001 Henley Royal Regatta.
Duncan's deep roots in rowing are highlighted by his family’s legacy, with his father, Reg Free, being a notable figure in Australian rowing, coaching Duncan and his brother Marcus to multiple state, national, and international victories.
Under his father’s coaching, Duncan won the President’s Cup at the Australian Rowing Championships seven times, representing Queensland.
After the 2004 Athens Olympics, Duncan transitioned from sculls to sweep rowing, forming a successful partnership with Drew Ginn. Together, they won two World Championships and an Olympic gold medal.
Duncan brings a wealth of experience from his role as Director of Sports Engagement at Griffith University. There he oversaw digital marketing and branding, collaborated on high-level promotional strategies, and managed significant financial budgets.
Duncan’s extensive experience and personal achievements in rowing align well with the values and aspirations of the Commonwealth Games Australia. His election to the CGA Board marks a promising step forward in enhancing the profile and success of the Commonwealth Sport Movement in Australia.
