Rowing Australia is delighted to announce that the two University of Queensland Graduate Certificates in Sports Coaching Scholarships for 2021 have been awarded to Claire Jansen, from Perth, Western Australia and Zac Smith, from Melbourne University Boat Club, Victoria.
Claire has been rowing since 2002 where she was the stroke of her women’s eight and represented her State. She started her coaching career in 2007 at Perth College in WA, before moving on to coaching the Masters rowers at ANA Rowing Club. Claire then made the move across to Sydney, New South Wales, where she continued coaching Masters at Mosman Rowing Club under the tutelage of the late Nick Garratt. After gaining her Level One and Two coaching accreditation, Claire started a position as Lead Coach in Rowing WA’s pilot program, Making Waves. This program is aimed at teaching life skills to disadvantaged young people through the sport of rowing. With this scholarship, and furthering her coaching qualifications, Claire will be able to make a difference to the lives of people through the sport of rowing. This is something that she is very passionate about and cannot wait to see what opportunities will come from completing her Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching.
Zac has his Level One and Two coaching accreditation, as well as having over eight years of experience in both Junior and High Performance rowing. Zac has had a passion for rowing ever since he was an athlete, at a younger age, and is glad that he is able to continue to be involved with a sport that he loves through his coaching career. Zac one day hopes to be a coach at the pinnacle of the sport, but also finds great fulfillment and value coaching at a grass roots level. As Zac had already completed the Graduate Certificate in Sports Coaching last year, the 2021 scholarship will enable him to continue his studies and continue onto his Masters of Sports Coaching.
Thank you to all of our applicants for submitting applications for the scholarship. The Selection Panel stated that it was not an easy decision and that many of the applicants were deserving of the opportunity. Thank you all for your contributions to our sport, and continuing to make our sport excellent both on and off the water.
