It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a true legend of Australian rowing, Garth Manton. Garth’s journey in rowing began at Geelong Grammar School, where he honed his skills in the sport. His passion for rowing blossomed early, evident in his dedication to the sport throughout his life.
Joining the esteemed Mercantile Rowing Club in 1951, Garth quickly made his mark on the rowing scene. His prowess as a rower was undeniable, and he was rarely seen outside the realm of eights, firmly establishing himself as both a proud five-man and an integral member of the eight-oared crews.
Garth’s list of achievements is extensive and illustrious. From consecutive victories at the Melbourne Regatta to triumphs at the State Championships and beyond, his dedication and skill propelled him to the upper echelons of the sport. Notably, his participation in the 1956 Olympic Games brought home a bronze medal for Australia, a testament to his talent and determination on the world stage.
Beyond his achievements on the water, Garth’s contributions to the rowing community were immeasurable. His infectious enthusiasm and larger-than-life personality made him a cherished figure among his peers. As a raconteur and speaker at rowing functions, his presence always brought joy and laughter to those around him.

Outside of rowing, Garth’s impact extended far and wide. His dedicated service to the Old Geelong Football Club and the Anglesea Recreation and Sports Club underscored his commitment to his community and his enduring legacy beyond the boat.
Garth’s passing leaves a void in the rowing community that will be deeply felt. His friendship, humour, and unwavering support will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
