Lucy Stephan OAM

Lucy is from Nihil, Victoria.  She attended Ballarat Grammar School (BGS) as a boarding school student.  She first started Rowing at the age of 16 under the guidance of Coach Bill Gribble.  During her time at BGS, she also played Netball, Basketball, and Australian Football.  She has been part of many victorious Queen’s Cup Eights at the respective annual Interstate regattas: 2012-2018, 2021 and 2022.

Lucy has been part of many successful Australian crews.  At the 2012 World Under Championships, she won a Silver medal in the Women’s Coxless Four.  The following year, in the same boat class, she won a Silver medal at the 2013 World Cup 2 regatta, and a Gold at the World Under 23 Championships.  At the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio, Lucy represented Australia in the Women’s Eight. 

In 2017, she was named in the Women's Four alongside fellow Olympian Molly Goodman, plus Sarah Hawe and Katrina Werry.  The crew went on to win the World Rowing Cups 2 and 3 regattas and also the World Rowing Championships, while also being named the 2017 Australian Female Crew of the Year at the 2017 Hancock Prospecting Rower of the Year Awards. In 2018, she raced in the Women's Four at the World Rowing Cups 2 and 3 regattas, and the World Rowing Championships.

At the 2020 rescheduled Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Lucy teamed up with Annabelle McIntyre OAM, Rosemary Popa OAM, and Jessica Morrison OAM in the Women’s Coxless Four and won the Olympic Gold.

 For the 2022 international season, Lucy remained in the Women's Coxless Four for World Cup 2 in Poznan, teaming up with fellow Olympic Champion Annabelle McIntyre, as well as fellow Olympians Kat Werry and Bronwyn Cox, where they won Gold.

Based on her performances on and off the water, Lucy was awarded the 2019 Victorian Athelte of the year award, the 2021 VIS award for excellence, and the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

She is also studying an Arts (Sociology and Media Studies) degree at Deakin University.  Lucy also holds a Diploma in Fashion Design and Technology from R.M.I.T. TAFE, and is employed as a Freelance Production specialist for Rowing Australia sponsor, 776BC.

Her roles models are Kim Brennan OAM (2016 Olympic Gold medallist, Women’s Single Scull) and Olympian Sarah Tait (Silver medal, London 2012, Women’s Pair).
