What to do in WA

What to Do in Western Australia

Visiting Western Australia for the 2026 Australian Rowing Championships is the perfect opportunity to explore the natural beauty, culture and vibrant experiences this state is known for. From pristine beaches and island escapes to world‑class food and heritage towns, here are some highlights worth discovering during your stay.

Perth & Surrounds

Perth, Australia’s sunniest capital city, blends laid‑back beach culture with modern city living. Explore dynamic arts and cultural precincts, enjoy riverside dining at Elizabeth Quay, or stroll through Kings Park and Botanic Garden, one of the largest inner‑city parks in the world with sweeping views over the city and Swan River.

Just beyond the city, discover a coastline of golden beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunset picnics. A short cruise or ferry from the CBD will take you to some of the region’s most scenic waterside outlooks.

Rottnest Island

A favorite day trip from Perth, Rottnest Island (Wadjemup)is a car‑free sanctuary surrounded by clear blue waters, secluded bays and white sandy beaches. Explore the island by bike, snorkel vibrant coral reefs, or meet the iconic quokka — a small marsupial found only in Western Australia. Ferries to “Rotto” depart regularly from Fremantle, Perth and Hillarys Boat Harbour, and scenic flights are also available.

Swan Valley

Just a short drive east of Perth, the Swan Valley is Western Australia’s oldest wine region. It’s a great spot to taste award‑winning wines, sample gourmet local produce and explore boutique cellar doors. Whether you choose a relaxed lunch at a vineyard restaurant, a cruise on the Swan River, ora guided food and drink tour, the valley has something for every palate.

Fremantle

Historic Fremantle (Walyalup) is a vibrant port city with a lively cultural scene. Wander heritage streetscapes filled with colonial architecture, enjoy fresh seafood at harbour‑side eateries, or browse stalls at the Fremantle Markets. Must‑see attractions include the Western Australian Maritime Museum and the World Heritage–listed Fremantle Prison. Fremantle’s cafes, bars and live music venues make it a lively complement to Perth’s offering.

Mandurah

About an hour’s drive south of Perth, Mandurah (Mandjoogoordap) offers a relaxed coastal atmosphere with beautiful water ways and abundant wildlife. The Mandurah Estuary is known for sightings of bottlenose dolphins, and the foreshore is ideal for picnics, strolls and alfresco dining. The region’s seafood — including fresh blue swimmer crab — isa local favourite, and seasonal events such as Mandurah Crab Fest celebrate the area’s fishing heritage.

Getting Around & Tips

Public transport, including trains and ferries, can help you reach key destinations such as Fremantle and Mandurah from Perth. For more day‑trip ideas and tailored travel tips, Visitor Centres are located throughout the region, including in Perth, Fremantle, Rottnest Island, Swan Valley and Mandurah
