Today's volunteer of the day, Greg Bishop, has travelled from Brisbane to assist in his second Australian Rowing Championships (ARC) at Lake Barrington International Rowing Course.
Having signed up as a volunteer eight seasons ago when his eldest daughter started school rowing, Greg has since dedicated much of his time to the sport. His first experience volunteering for Rowing Australia was at #ARC21, when the event was last held in Tasmania. Greg is proud that ARC is back at Lake Barrington for #ARC25.
For Greg, volunteering is a family affair. At #ARC21, he had the opportunity to watch his eldest daughter, Minaya, win a Gold Medal. While she is now training in the United States on an elite athlete scholarship, this year he will watch his youngest daughter compete with the University of Queensland Boat Club, and when volunteering at state regattas, he is able to watch his two sons compete.
Greg was ecstatic to return to Lake Barrington International Rowing Course, stating how breathtaking they found the venue when first discovering it in 2021.
Transitioning from spectator services to bow number officer and victory pontoon assistance, Greg thoroughly enjoys the company of the volunteer cohort and meeting people from all over Australia who have come together to give back to rowing and Rowing Australia.
Driven by the time his children have dedicated, and what they have gained from the sport, Greg sees volunteering as a meaningful way to contribute to the championships, doing his part to ensure it can run seamlessly.
“I admire the spirit in which the competition is conducted,” Greg said, highlighting the positive impact both athletes and volunteers have on the competition.
