The Opportunity

As the Head Coach / 1st VIII Coach, you will:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive rowing program for all levels of ability.

  • Lead and mentor a team of coaches to ensure continued program success.

  • Set high yet realistic targets for the 1st VIII and other crews at State and National levels.

  • Represent the College at local, regional, and national events.

  • Build and maintain external relationships with APS, Rowing Victoria, rowing clubs, and overseas colleges.

You are a highly motivated and results-oriented professional with a passion for rowing and a proven ability to develop and lead high-performing teams. You thrive in a collaborative environment, excel at communication and leadership, and understand the importance of fostering enjoyment in the sport.

Position Details

  • Hours: 0.75 FTE (with potential for full-time if additional skills such as teaching, boat repairs, or sports administration can be utilised by the College).

  • Remuneration: Dependent on experience.

  • Experience in an educational environment (preferred but not essential).

Mercantile Rowing Club is seeking two passionate and experienced Youth Development Coaches to join our team. These roles are integral to delivering our High-Performance Vision 2024-28 in partnership with the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) and Rowing Australia’s Pathway Program.

We are looking for coaches to lead the development of our Men’s and Women’s Youth Programs, focusing on the recruitment and progression of U19 and U21 athletes. These part-time positions offer the opportunity to work at one of Australia’s most prestigious rowing clubs, based at Boathouse Drive, Melbourne, with travel as required.

As a High-Performance Pathway Club for Rowing Australia, we are committed to providing an elite training environment, fostering physical and mental resilience, and developing the next generation of rowing talent.

About the Roles

The Men’s Youth Development Coach and Women’s Youth Development Coach will report to the Mercantile Head Coach and VIS Lead Coach, overseeing the recruitment, coaching, and preparation of athletes for national and international competition.

  • Tenure: April 2025 – December 2028
  • Location: Boathouse Drive, Melbourne (travel required)
  • Type: Part-time (competitive remuneration based on experience)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the U19 and U21 Junior and Youth Programs
  • Recruit and mentor talented athletes, fostering high-performance success
  • Coach rowers to compete at state, national, and international levels
  • Work collaboratively with Melbourne University Boat Club and key stakeholders
  • Attend regattas, oversee athlete progression, and support a positive team culture
  • Assist with fleet management, logistics, and administration

Who We Are Looking For

  • Experienced rowing coach with NCAS Level 2 (or equivalent) accreditation
  • Proven success coaching and developing underage athletes
  • Strong connections with school rowing programs and talent pathways
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Commitment to athlete well-being and high-performance culture
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, athletes, and Rowing Australia’s pathway programs

RA is the national governing body for the sport and is responsible for the leadership, administration, and governance of the sport nationally. RA delivers the high-performance program and is responsible for the performance of the Australian Rowing Team, who are high performing on the global stage including Olympic, Paralympic, and Commonwealth Games.

About the role

The Wellbeing & Engagement Lead will play a vital role in Rowing Australia’s High-Performance strategy. You will be responsible for supporting athletes as they navigate the high-performance environment, empowering them to find balance between wellbeing, personal and professional development.

Rowing Australia is committed to Winning Well. Working closely with the W&E Manager your duties will include;

  • Lead and implement RA’s Wellbeing Strategy, ensuring alignment with the High-Performance Strategy to enhance both performance and athlete experience.
  • Support athletes through group education and individual consultations on wellbeing-related matters.
  • Provide tailored, proactive support to athletes during high-risk periods (injury, non-selection, post-benchmark events, major transitions, significant life events).
  • Implement and review policies and procedures aligned with the AW&E Framework to support the holistic development, safety, and protection of athletes.
  • Collaborate with coaches and support staff to align wellbeing initiatives with performance outcomes.
  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external networks, ensuring athletes have access to appropriate support services and resources.
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of wellbeing, mental health, and social issues impacting high-performance athletes.

About you

Rowing Australia is seeking a compassionate and professional leader who can foster trust and deliver impactful wellbeing initiatives within the high-performance environment. You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications and/ or relevant experience (e.g., education, psychology, social work, counselling).
  • Knowledge of emerging issues for athletes and an ability to provide proactive programs to address these issues.
  • Case management and athlete support, including triage and referral.
  • A genuine passion for empowering individuals to thrive and develop.
  • Current understanding of issues impacting mental health and wellbeing.
