Jack Hargreaves OAM

NSW | Sydney University Boat Club

Jack Hargreaves hails from a rural town in Country New South Wales called Nyngan but relocated to boarding school in Sydney after completing his primary education and from there took up rowing. The St Joseph's graduate first represented Australia in 2013 when he competed in the Sydney World Rowing Cup 1 in the Men's Eight and claimed a bronze medal. The young rower then went on to compete at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in the Men's Eight.

However, it was in 2014 that the New South Welshman stood out when he claimed a silver medal alongside Nick Wheatley in the U23 Men's Pair at the 2014 World Rowing U23 Championships in Varese, Italy. Hargreaves and Wheatley were named in the Men's Pair this season coached by Mark Prater, and went on to win a silver medal in the 2015 U23 World Rowing Championships and qualify their boat for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

In 2016/17, Hargreaves joined the Men's National Training Centre and was selected to row in the Men's Four at the 2017 World Rowing Cups and World Championships. He went on to win gold in the Men's Four at the 2017 World Championships, the first time in 26 years that Australia had won the boat class. In 2018, Hargreaves was once again named in the Men's Four, where he raced at World Cups 2 and 3, winning gold. He then went on to race at the World Rowing Championships in 2018 in the same boat class, winning back-to-back gold medals, he also raced at Henley winning the Grand Challenge Cup. His crew was also named the 2018 FISA Male Crew of the Year.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, held in July 2021, Hargreaves won an Olympic Gold Medal in the Men's Four with crew mates Alexander Hill, Alexander Purnell and Spencer Turrin. It was a famous victory that broke Australia's run of three consecutive Olympic Silver Medals in this boat class. Further, the result came almost 25 years to the day since Australia last won gold in this race at Atlanta 1996.

Jack is currently studying for a Bachelor in Clinical Exercise Physiology.

In 2022, Hargreaves remained in the Men's Coxless Four, with fellow Olympic Champions Alex Purnell OAM and Spencer Turrin OAM, as well as fellow Olympian Jack O'Brien. At World Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland the crew remained undefeated and retained the Gold Medal.

The same crew competed at the World Cup III regatta held in Lucerne, Switzerland and won a Silver Medal.

The same crew competed at the World Cup III regatta held in Lucerne, Switzerland and the 2022 World Championships held in Račice, Czech Republic. At both said regattas, the Four finished with a Silver Medal.

In 2024, Jack and his fellow Tokyo gold medallists Alexander Purnell and Spencer Turrin were added to the men's eight team to try and win an elusive first gold for Australia in the event.

At the World Rowing Cup II the new crew, including Jack, qualified for the men's eight final and ultimately finished in fourth place.
