Shirley Stokes AM

Shirley A Stokes AM has made an indelible mark on the world of rowing, particularly in the development of para-rowing.

Hailing from central western NSW, Shirley's rowing journey began at Sydney University, where she found a welcoming community in the rowing club. Her career quickly progressed as she won two NSW lightweight championships and was awarded a Sydney University rowing Blue.

Her impact on the sport extends far beyond her athletic achievements. Shirley has been a tireless volunteer, serving on the Boards of Rowing NSW and Rowing Australia, and playing a pivotal role in the establishment and development of para-rowing both locally and internationally. She managed Australia's first para rowing team at the World Championships in 2002 and was a foundation member of FISA's Para Rowing Commission. Her efforts were crucial in gaining national federations' commitment to para-rowing and in contributing to FISA's application for Paralympic inclusion.

Shirley's administrative work includes organizing "Come and Try" para rowing days, integrating para-rowing into club programs, and developing guidelines for national championship participation. Her international contributions have been equally significant, including drafting FISA guidelines and regulations for para-rowing competition and classification.

In recognition of her profound contributions, Shirley was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in January 2024. Her pioneering work has laid the foundation for Australia's success in para-rowing today.
