Rowsellas legend hangs up his oars: thank you Jed Altschwager

Jed Altschwager PLY, one of Australia’s most accomplished para-rowers, has officially announced his retirement from rowing, closing a remarkable chapter in Australian sporting history.

A member of the prestigious Rowsellas squad, Altschwager’s journey in rowing has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by historic achievements, world-class performances, and an inspiring impact on the rowing community.

Altschwager’s career reached unparalleled heights in 2024, when he, alongside crewmate Nikki Ayers PLY, won Australia’s first-ever Paralympic gold medal in para-rowing at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The duo’s victory in the PR3 Mixed Double Sculls secured their place in history, cementing their status as one of the greatest para-rowing crews the sport has ever seen.

In addition to this crowning achievement, Altschwager has been celebrated for a host of accolades and records.

He is a 2023 World Rowing Champion and a world’s best-time holder.

As a result of their triumph at the Paris Paralympics, the double has been honoured with multiple prestigious awards, including Para Athlete of the Year at the South Australian Institute of Sport Awards, Rowing Australia’s Para Crew of the Year, and Paralympics Australia Team of the Year.

Reflecting on his career, Altschwager shared a heartfelt message, encapsulating the gratitude and emotion of his journey: “It’s hard to put all the words out on the table, all the emotions, all the feelings,” Altschwager said.

“I can’t express my gratitude enough to the people that have helped me along my journey, that have been along for the ride.

“People close to me and people that I have connected with along the way… Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
