As a local Tasmanian and father of three rowers, Harold Bain has been a dedicated volunteer to Rowing Tasmania for the past 15 years. Signing up when his eldest began school rowing, Harold has spent many of his seasons at Lake Barrington International Rowing Course (LBIRC) boat driving and officiating.
Harold volunteered for his first Rowing Australia event when the championships came to Tasmania for #ARC21. As no stranger to the beautiful course, Harold spent the week on the water, close to the action driving the umpire boats. Enjoying his first national volunteering experience, Harold also assisted at the Australian Masters Rowing Championships as a marshall from the start pontoon when it was held at LBRC in 2024.
Despite no longer having children involved in rowing, Harold and his wife Karen, who primarily works in the Bow Number and Entries office, continue to dedicate their time, volunteering for the sport. Harold describes their work as the couple's way of paying back what rowing has given all three of their daughters.
This year, as well as giving up his time to help out in the car park and wherever a hand is needed throughout the competition week, Harold and many other passionate Tasmanians spent the week prior ensuring the rowing course was prepared for #ARC25. This was a fast turnaround, requiring all hands on deck as Tasmanias ‘Head of the River’ was held at Lake Barrington the previous weekend. Harold holds much pride for Lake Barrington, its beautiful view and nice people, believing this state venue is as good as anywhere in the country and would love to see national events to continue returning to Lake Barrington.
Dedicating days to cleaning, polishing and building, the entire Rowing Tasmania team who assisted in the preparations are passionate about ensuring Lake Barrington is showcased to its full potential while providing a great experience for each athlete.
Working with both the maintenance volunteers and new volunteers is a highlight for Harold. He describes how everyone is always happy and has a smile on their face, making the experience even more enjoyable for all involved.
While many volunteers have been highlighted this week for their exceptional work and commitment to #ARC25, Rowing Australia would like to thank all volunteers for their efforts. With over 200 willing parents, friends and passionate supporters of the sport putting up their hands to help out, the volunteers have had a huge impact on #ARC25.
“Bottom of heart cannot thank the volunteers who have generously given up their time and done what is asked of them enough” - Bianca Chiera, Events and Competitions Coordinator at Rowing Australia.
