Sophie Houston

NSW | Sydney University Boat Club

Sophie “Soph” Houston is a bow-side sweep rower from Sydney, New South Wales, who has combined a decorated collegiate career in the United States with international success for Australia. A Queenwood School alumna, she first represented Australia at the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo, racing the double scull. Four years later she achieved a career highlight by winning gold in the Women’s Coxed Four at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Her U.S. collegiate career began at Yale University, where she rowed in both the Varsity and Second Varsity Eights, earning All-Ivy recognition and multiple CRCA Scholar-Athlete honours. She contributed to Yale’s Ivy League Championship titles and top NCAA finishes across several seasons, racing in both bow and stern-side seats. In 2022, Sophie helped the Second Varsity Eight win the Ivy League and finish fourth at the NCAA Championships, before earning second-team All-Ivy as a senior in the Varsity Eight.

Following her undergraduate degree in Global Affairs, with a certificate in Energy Studies, Sophie transferred to the University of Washington to complete a Master of Public Administration while continuing her rowing career. At UW she slotted straight into the Varsity Eight, racing to wins at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Big Ten Invitational, and the Windermere Cup against New Zealand, before claiming Big Ten Championship gold and a top-five NCAA finish in 2025.

Alongside her collegiate and international racing, Sophie represents Sydney University Boat Club domestically, with past national titles in both the single and quad sculls. She also works as a Junior Consultant with Thread Consulting, complementing her studies and rowing with professional experience.

Guided early on by coaches Alfie Young and Ciaran Glynn, Sophie is known for her determination to row longer and stronger, to absorb as much knowledge as possible from those around her, and above all, to be the best teammate she can. Her most memorable sporting moment so far remains racing the Windermere Cup with the University of Washington, a reminder of the global journey rowing has given her.

Sophie is currently a member of the Australian Women's Eight.
