Barbara Fenner

Barbara Fenner is an extraordinary figure in the world of rowing, known for her extensive contributions as a rower, coach, educator, team manager, selector, administrator, and historian.

Starting her rowing journey in 1976 at Melbourne University, Barbara quickly ascended to the national level, representing Australia at the 1978 World Championships. Despite her non-rowing background, Barbara's determination led her to become Australia’s first female coach at a World Championships, where she achieved remarkable success.

Her career highlights include coaching Australian crews to medals at international competitions, spearheading talent identification programs in South Australia, and developing essential coaching materials still used globally.

As the National Coaching Education Director, Barbara produced the influential "Go Rowing" books and videos. Her work on the FISA Youth Commission further showcased her dedication to developing rowing worldwide.

Barbara's administrative roles have been equally impactful, serving as general manager of the South Australian Rowing Association and securing significant government grants to develop the West Lakes rowing course infrastructure. Recognised for her contributions, she holds life memberships with multiple rowing associations.

Barbara Fenner’s legacy in rowing is unparalleled, marked by her commitment to athlete development, innovative coaching methods, and significant contributions to the growth and success of rowing both in Australia and internationally.

Now retired, she continues to maintain a strong interest in the sport from her farm in Victoria.
