Frequently Asked Questions
Your questions answered about the Rowing Australia Talent Identification Programme (TID)
Talent ID currently focuses primarily on athletes aged 14–21, which reflects an important window for long-term athlete development.
We also consider physical attributes commonly associated with success in rowing at the highest level, including aerobic capacity, power, leverage and, in many cases, above-average height.
These guidelines help us identify athletes who may be well suited to the demands of high-performance rowing, but they are not rigid cut-offs. Every athlete is assessed holistically, with no single characteristic determining potential.
No prior rowing experience is required.
Our Talent ID program looks for athletic potential - qualities like size, power, coordination, competitiveness and coachability - whether you come from rowing or another sport.
If you’re younger than the age criteria, the best preparation is to continue building a broad athletic base.
Playing multiple sports, developing fitness and coordination, and enjoying competition all help lay strong foundations for rowing later on.
We encourage you to stay active and reconnect with us when you meet the age criteria.
Testing is held nationally across Australia. There are 10 Performance Hubs - five club programmes and five state institute programmes - to ensure access regardless of where you live.
This programme is initially designed to identify athletes with potential for still water rowing. As athletes progress and develop, there may also be opportunities down the track to transition into coastal rowing, depending on their strengths, interests, and the evolving needs of the pathway.
Initial Talent ID testing opportunities are generally free or low-cost, though this may vary by location or delivery partner.
Any costs will be communicated clearly ahead of time.
The Rowing Australia Talent Identification Programme looks at more than just height and fitness.
Important qualities include:
-
Competitive mindset
-
Coachability
-
Work ethic
-
Resilience
-
Long-term development potential
Potential is about far more than one test result.
Absolutely.
Many successful rowers have transitioned from sports such as athletics, swimming, basketball, cycling, surf sports and team sports.
Crossover athletes are encouraged to apply.
Being identified through Talent ID may lead to entry into a development pathway, which could include:
-
Ongoing monitoring
-
Further testing opportunities
-
Connection with coaches or development programs
-
Introduction to rowing clubs or high-performance environments
-
Guidance on the next stage of your progression
Selection is the beginning of a pathway, not the end goal.
Training volume will depend on your age, experience and stage of development.
As a general guide:
- Younger developing athletes may train around 3-5 sessions per week
- Older or post-school athletes may progress toward 10–12 sessions per week
Programmes are built progressively, balancing rowing with school, study and other commitments.
Yes.
We want to identify talented athletes from across Australia, not just those near major training centres.
Depending on location and outcomes, support may include:
- Connection to a local rowing club
- State or pathway program opportunities
- Satellite or remote development support
- Access to future testing opportunities
Location shouldn’t be a barrier to being seen.
Absolutely.
Not being selected through Talent ID doesn’t close the door on rowing. Many athletes come through club, school and university pathways and go on to perform at a very high level.
If you have questions about eligibility, testing opportunities or pathways, please email the Rowing Australia Talent ID team at: hchapman@rowingaustralia.com.au

APPLY ANYWAY
If you’re wondering whether you fit the profile, we encourage you to put yourself forward. Talent Identification is about discovering potential - not about expecting finished rowers.
If you have the drive to challenge yourself and a strong athletic foundation, we’d like to hear from you.
