Angus Widdicombe OLY
VIC | Mercantile Rowing Club
Angus Widdicombe is a two-time Olympian and one of the most respected senior members of Australia’s men’s eight, known for his leadership, strength, and deep commitment to the team boat. Born in Geelong, Victoria, and educated at Geelong College, Widdicombe has forged a decorated career spanning more than a decade at the international level.
After first learning to row at school and launching his senior career with Barwon Rowing Club, he moved to Melbourne to join Mercantile Rowing Club, an environment that helped propel him to the elite ranks. He won national titles in the U23 coxed four and pair, and made his Australian debut in 2016 at the U23 World Championships.
Widdicombe’s breakthrough came in 2017 when he claimed Silver at the World Championships in the coxed pair. From there, he became a mainstay in the Australian men’s eight, helping the crew to multiple podium finishes, including silver at the 2018 World Championships and Bronze in both 2022 and 2023. At Henley Royal Regatta, he memorably pushed the Sinković brothers to the limit in the Silver Goblets final and has raced in Mercantile colours in the Thames Cup.
Angus has twice represented Australia at the Olympic Games, stroking the men’s eight in Tokyo 2020 and again forming part of the powerhouse crew that raced in Paris 2024. In Paris, the men’s eight qualified through a challenging repechage and finished sixth in the A-Final, a testament to their resilience and competitive drive in one of rowing’s most iconic events.
Away from the water, Widdicombe holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science from Deakin University and has worked with rowing manufacturer Sykes Racing. After taking a short break from the sport post-Tokyo, he returned to the NTC in 2022 re-energised, bringing both wisdom and enthusiasm to a younger group of rowers.
Widely regarded as a leader within the national squad, Gus is known for setting the standard in training, embracing the physical and mental demands of the eight, and his enduring love for team performance. Whether it’s King’s Cup battles, Henley finals, or world championship podiums, Widdicombe’s career is marked by a fierce work ethic, unwavering belief in the crew, and a deep appreciation for the people and culture that underpin his sport.
