Berry Durston OAM

Berry Durston OAM was a towering figure in Australian rowing, with a career that spanned five decades and left an indelible mark on the sport.

Starting as a competitive rower, Berry first attended the Interstate Championships in 1960 at age 19, winning the King’s Cup and later competing in the Rome Olympics.

Transitioning to a role as an umpire, he obtained his Australian umpire's licence in 1977 and officiated at nearly every Interstate Championship until 2004, including the Sydney Olympic Games.

Berry's administrative contributions were equally significant, serving as President of Rowing Australia from 1979 to 1983 and holding various leadership roles within the Western Australian Rowing Association. His efforts in developing club rowing in Western Australia were unparalleled, earning him life memberships with both Rowing WA and Rowing Australia.

Berry's legacy includes the establishment of the Bayswater Rowing Centre and the refurbishment of Rowing WA headquarters.

His dedication to the sport was recognised with numerous accolades, including the Order of Australia and the Western Australian Sports Federation’s Award of Merit.
