Dr. Stephen Hinchy OAM, ASM, was one of the greatest contributors to rowing, renowned for his extraordinary dedication and service to the sport.
Beginning his rowing journey in 1957 with Brisbane State High School and Commercial Rowing Club, Hinchy quickly became a prominent figure in Queensland rowing, earning numerous accolades and contributing significantly as a rower, umpire, and administrator. His leadership roles included Chairman and President of Rowing Queensland and President of Rowing Australia from 1996 to 2000, during which he played a crucial role in stabilising the sport at a national level.
Hinchy also served as a team doctor for various Australian rowing teams, including at World Championships, Olympic Games, and Commonwealth Games, displaying unwavering commitment to athlete welfare.
His contributions were recognised with the Order of Australia Medal and the Australian Sports Medal. Elected to life memberships of Rowing Queensland, Rowing Australia, and Commercial Rowing Club, Hinchy's legacy is marked by his remarkable problem-solving abilities, financial and personal sacrifices, and his dedication to making decisions with the sport's and athletes' best interests at heart.
His impact on rowing, from the club level to the international stage, remains unparalleled.
