Nicholas “Dunners” Dunlop is one of Australia’s most accomplished young coxswains, with a growing list of domestic and international triumphs matched only by his precision, leadership, and poise under pressure. A proud product of Sydney’s Shore School and Sydney Rowing Club, Nick is currently based in Seattle where he studies Psychology at the University of Washington and coxes the Huskies’ Varsity Eight, one of the most respected collegiate rowing crews in the world.
Nick made history in 2022 and 2023 by coxing the Australian Women’s Coxed Four to back-to-back Gold medals at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. These victories were a testament to his ability to command respect, execute strategy, and elevate a crew on the world stage.
At Washington, Nick’s achievements are extensive. He has led the Varsity Eight to victories over Stanford, Cal, Harvard, and New Zealand, secured the Schoch Cup, and claimed national honours including an IRA National Championship, Empacher-IRCA First-Team All-America, and Academic accolades across multiple seasons. He was also at the helm for the 2023 Windermere Cup, where his Huskies crew memorably defeated Australia, his favourite sporting moment to date.
Before making waves in the U.S. college system, Nick honed his craft with Shore and Sydney Rowing Club, guiding Shore’s second eight to a Head of the River win in 2019, and taking an SRC four to the semifinals of the Britannia Challenge Cup at Henley. He was named to the NSW state team in 2020 and won a U21 state championship in the four that same year.
A natural communicator and student of the sport, Nick combines his interest in neuroscience with his passion for rowing, working as a Research Assistant at the Cognition & Cortical Dynamics Lab at UW. He brings sharp focus and emotional intelligence to both racing and training environments—always striving to “recognise and communicate pivotal moments that impact race outcomes,” while being, above all, a good teammate.
Outside the boat, Nick enjoys cooking, golf, photography, and music, and continues to forge a path where high performance and curiosity go hand-in-hand.
