Nick “Smithy” Smith is a stroke-side sweep rower from Melbourne, Victoria, and a rising force within the Australian men’s sweep squad. A proud product of Melbourne University Boat Club and Wesley College, Nick has been an NTC scholar for five months and is already chasing big goals in 2025: medal at World Cups, medal at the World Championships, and make the final at Henley Royal Regatta.
Nick’s rowing journey began in Year 8 after attempts at football and rugby didn’t quite click. His early foundation was laid by coach and former Olympian Matt Ryan, and he has since become a regular podium presence at national and international levels.
A two-time U23 World Championship representative in the Men’s Four, Nick earned a silver medal in 2023, his most memorable sporting moment to date. He has captured multiple national titles, including the U19 and U23 eights, and most recently, the Open Men’s Four and the King’s Cup with Victoria in 2025.
Currently studying a Bachelor of Laws at Deakin University, Nick balances academic demands with his elite sporting ambitions. Off the water, he’s fascinated by the 1983 America’s Cup.
Nick is currently a member of the Australian Men's Pair.
