Noel Wilkinson AM BEM

Noel F Wilkinson AM BEM is a name synonymous with dedication, volunteerism, and the sport of rowing in Australia.

Noel started his rowing career with the South Hawthorn Rowing Club before moving to Banks Rowing Club. He competed at an elite level until the age of 45 and transitioned seamlessly into various administrative roles. His influence extended far beyond mere participation, reaching into the realms of team management, fundraising, and organizational leadership.

His roles were varied and impactful. He served as an official at the 1956 Olympic Games, managed Victorian teams at multiple Interstate Championships, and was the team manager for the Australian squad at the 1962 British Empire & Commonwealth Games and the 1970 World Championships. Noel was a dedicated member of the administrative staff for the 1980 Olympic Games and held key financial positions, including Honorary Treasurer of the Australian Rowing Council and Rowing Australia.

Noel's commitment to rowing was deeply rooted in volunteerism. He never held a remunerated position in the sport, instead dedicating countless hours to fundraising and administration. His efforts established a solid financial base for Rowing Victoria, with funds raised over 16 years creating substantial Interstate and International Funds. These funds continue to fully support the Interstate Team and assist Victorian international representatives with their seat fees.

His impact was also felt at the national level. Noel was instrumental in raising funds for national rowing teams and served as National Coordinator of the International Rowing Foundation. His work extended to the Victorian Olympic Council, where he served as treasurer and Appeal Coordinator for three Olympic Games, raising significant funds to support Olympic teams. His efforts in establishing a capital fund from 1972 onwards have provided ongoing financial support for Australian Olympians.

Noel's contributions were recognised with numerous honors, including life memberships in Rowing Victoria, Rowing Australia, and Banks Rowing Club, where he also served as Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Captain, Social Secretary, and Chairman. His enduring legacy is commemorated through the Noel Wilkinson Trophy, awarded for the Interstate Men’s Youth Eight Championship and the Victorian Youth Eight Championship.

Noel's work was marked by enormous vitality and a relentless drive to support and develop the sport of rowing. His ability to raise funds and establish lasting financial foundations for various organizations has left an indelible mark on Australian rowing. As a Victorian, Australian, and FISA umpire, his dedication to the sport extended beyond administration to ensuring the integrity and fairness of competition.
