Tim McLaren OAM has made an outstanding contribution to Australian and international rowing over more than 40 years as an Olympic athlete, high-performance coach and mentor.
An Olympic silver medallist in the Men’s Quadruple Scull at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, McLaren transitioned into coaching and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s leading high-performance figures. After helping develop Tasmania’s early high-performance rowing system, he led the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Haberfield Rowing Club to become one of Australia’s premier rowing programs, producing dozens of Olympians and Olympic medallists. Among his greatest achievements was coaching Peter Antonie and Stephen Hawkins to Olympic gold in the Men’s Double Scull at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
McLaren’s influence extended internationally through his tenure as Head Coach of the USA Men’s National Team, leading the program through to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
His lasting impact will be measured not only in Olympic success but in the athletes, coaches and programs he has developed.
