Alex Nichol is a stroke-side sweep rower from Balmain, NSW, known for his fierce work ethic, natural leadership, and passion for the sport. A proud product of Newington College, Alex was Captain of Rowing 2017, where his rowing journey first took shape. Inspired by a strong school program, he quickly developed into one of Australia’s top pathway athletes.
In 2019, Alex etched his name into rowing history by winning the Wyfold Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta, a milestone that stands as one of his proudest achievements. He was later recognised by Rowing Australia as the Pathway Athlete of the Year in 2022, a testament to his consistency, leadership, and impact on and off the water.
Nichol claimed national titles in the U23 Men’s Pair, U23 Men’s Four, and Open Men’s Eight in 2021, and has since gone on to represent New South Wales in consecutive King’s Cup victories in 2022 and 2023. Internationally, he was selected in the U21 Australian team in 2018 and the U23 team in 2021 (non-travelling due to the pandemic), and made his senior international debut in 2024, competing at the Holland Beker regatta.
Alex holds a Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Management from the University of Technology Sydney, where he developed a strong foundation in sports leadership and administration. His off-water experience includes internships at the NSW Institute of Sport, coaching roles at Newington College and Pymble Ladies’ College, and serving as Vice Captain of Sydney Rowing Club from 2022 to 2024.
Currently based in Canberra as a full-time NTC athlete, Alex’s 2025 goals include medalling at the World Rowing Cups, winning the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley, and representing Australia at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai.
