Alexander Hill OAM
SA | Adelaide Rowing Club
Alexander “Hilly” Hill is one of Australia’s most accomplished sweep rowers, known for his leadership from the stroke seat and an unparalleled record in the four. Hailing from Loxton in regional South Australia, Hill has become a mainstay of the Australian Rowing Team, earning Olympic Gold at Tokyo 2020, Silver at Rio 2016, and back-to-back World Championship titles in 2017 and 2018.
Hill’s journey began at Loxton High School before transferring to Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, where his love for rowing took shape. His early success included a Gold medal in the U19 coxed four at the 2011 Junior World Championships and continued through the Under 23 ranks with medals in both the pair and eight. His senior international debut came in 2013, and by 2015, he had helped secure Olympic qualification for Australia in the four with a Silver medal at the World Championships.
At Rio 2016, Hill and his crew powered to Silver, falling just short of Great Britain. But it was Tokyo 2020 that cemented his legacy, stroking the Australian four to a historic Olympic Gold in Olympic best time. Since then, Hill has continued to deliver on the world stage, medalling at World Cups, World Championships, claiming Henley titles and course records, and earning selection for a third Olympic Games in Paris 2024, where his crew placed sixth.
In 2018, Hill was part of the Australian Men’s Eight that won the prestigious Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta—setting a blistering course record that still stands to this day. Off the water, he also holds the 30-minute world record on the rowing ergometer, having rowed an astonishing 9,632 metres in 2024.
Domestically, Hill is a decorated athlete, with national titles across multiple boat classes including the pair, four, and single scull, claiming the prestigious President’s Cup for South Australia in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024. A proud member of Adelaide Rowing Club, he’s also given back to the sport as a coach.
Currently in his ninth year as a National Training Centre (NTC) scholar, Hill is also balancing part-time work as a Sport Development Officer with Rowing Australia and a Technical Officer in construction. Away from the water, he enjoys quiet moments in coffee shops and gardening. His motivation? A lifelong dream to represent Australia at the highest level, inspired by his sister’s own involvement in rowing.
Hill’s 2025 goal is simple yet powerful: to restore Australia’s dominance in the Men’s Four and continue to lead by example on the international stage.
