Angus Dawson OLY
SA | Adelaide Rowing Club
Angus Dawson is one of Australia’s most accomplished young rowers, known for his power, consistency, and presence in the boat. Hailing from Dingabledinga, South Australia, Dawson began his rowing journey at St Peter’s College and rapidly progressed through the ranks, representing South Australia in the Youth Eight at the Interstate Regatta in 2017 and 2018.
In 2019, he marked his arrival on the international stage by winning gold in the U23 Men’s Coxed Four at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships, Australia’s first in that event since 1999. The same year, he also claimed a national title in the Under 19 Men’s Double Scull and made his senior debut for South Australia in the prestigious King’s Cup.
Recognising his talent, the University of California, Berkeley offered him a rowing scholarship. Dawson raced in the Varsity Eight and contributed to the team’s ongoing success in American collegiate rowing. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned home to Australia in 2020 and was subsequently selected into the Australian Men's Eight for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he made his Olympic debut.
Back in the U.S. in 2022, Dawson helped Cal Berkeley win the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship. That same year, he returned to international duties and won bronze in the U23 Men’s Eight at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. In 2023, he capped off a historic collegiate season by going undefeated with the Cal Varsity Eight and earning First Team All-American honours.
That same year, Dawson partnered with Jack O’Brien in the Men’s Pair at World Rowing Cup II in Varese, taking Bronze. He then returned to the Men’s Eight for World Cup III in Lucerne, where Australia claimed gold. At the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Dawson and the Australian Men’s Eight earned a podium finish with a bronze medal.
In 2024, Dawson continued to anchor the Men’s Eight. After a fourth-place finish at World Cup II, the crew rebounded with a dominant Gold medal at World Cup III in Poznan. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Angus was the youngest member of the Australian Men’s Eight that placed sixth in the A-Final, matching their Tokyo result and marking a significant milestone in an already impressive career.
Dawson now sits in the seven seat of the Men's Coxed Eight.
