Brian J Richardson OAM, ASM has been awarded life membership of Rowing Australia in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport of rowing.
Brian’s career, which spans decades, is a testament to his dedication, skill, and unwavering commitment to both athletes and the rowing community.
Brian’s journey in rowing began with the Adelaide University Boat Club (SA), followed by Monash University Boat Club (VIC), and later Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC).
His early years as an athlete laid the foundation for what would become an extraordinary career.
Competing in the Interstate Men’s Eight Championship, Brian demonstrated talent, eventually securing his first King’s Cup victory for Victoria in 1979 after 13 attempts.
As a coach, Brian’s impact was felt globally.
He held prominent coaching positions in Canada, Denmark, South Korea, and Australia, leading teams to success at the highest levels of competition.
Notably, during his tenure as Head Coach of the Canadian rowing team from 2001 to 2004, the team won 65 medals at World Championships and Olympic Games, including 7 golds, 4 silvers, and 1 bronze.
Brian’s contributions extended beyond coaching.
As the Senior A and Para Chairman of Selectors for Australia from 2019 to 2024, he played a critical role in ensuring that the selection process was fair and rigorous, earning the respect and trust of both athletes and coaches.
Brian’s illustrious career includes participation in the Olympic Games, where he competed in the Men’s Eight in Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980, finishing fifth in both events.
He also coached the Australian Men’s Eight to a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, further solidifying his legacy as one of the sport’s most accomplished figures.
In addition to his rowing achievements, Brian was a member of the historic Australia II sailing crew that won the America’s Cup in 1983, ending the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak.
