Rowing Australia Honours Distinguished Contributors with 2026 Life Memberships at Annual General Meeting

Rowing Australia has unveiled three distinguished members of the rowing community for Life Membership, recognising decades of exceptional service and contribution to the sport at the highest level.

The The nominations of Tim McLaren OAM, Kathryn Ross PLY and Colin Smith have been endorsed by the Rowing Australia Board, the past Presidents of Rowing Australia, and the Member Associations at the 2026 Annual General Meeting held this evening.

Life Membership stands as one of the highest honours within Rowing Australia, awarded only to individuals whose contribution to the sport spans more than a decade and has had a lasting national impact.

Tim McLaren OAM has shaped Australian and international rowing across multiple generations.

An Olympic Silver medallist in the Men’s Quadruple Scull at the 1984 Olympic Games, McLaren transitioned into coaching and quickly established himself as one of the sport’s leading high-performance minds.

From building Tasmania’s early high-performance systems to coaching Australia’s Men’s Double Scull to Olympic Gold in 1992, his influence has been both immediate and enduring.

His leadership at UTS Haberfield Rowing Club produced dozens of Olympians and multiple Olympic medals, while his tenure as Head Coach of the US Men’s National Team further cemented his global reputation.

Kathryn Ross PLY stands as one of Australia’s most accomplished Paralympic rowers, with a career defined by resilience and sustained excellence.

A four-time Paralympian and Paralympic silver medallist, Ross has claimed four World Rowing Championship titles and played a central role in the development and visibility of para-rowing in Australia.

Her impact extends well beyond competition, contributing to governance and advocacy through roles with Rowing ACT and Disability Sports Australia, while continuing to inspire the next generation of para-athletes.

Colin Smith’s contribution to rowing spans elite competition, administration and global sports media. A member of Australia’s first FISA World Championship-winning lightweight crew in 1974, Smith went on to become one of the most influential administrators in the sport.

During his time on the Rowing Australia Board, including as President from 2009 to 2014, he led significant structural and strategic reforms.

These included strengthening national pathways, integrating high-performance systems and playing a key role in establishing the National Rowing Centre of Excellence.

His broader influence across international sport, particularly in media rights and strategy, has further elevated rowing’s position within the global sporting landscape.

Rowing Australia CEO, Sarah Cook OLY, said the nominations reflect the calibre of individuals who have shaped the sport’s legacy.

“Life Membership is reserved for those who have made a profound and lasting contribution to rowing in Australia. Tim, Kathryn and Colin have each influenced the sport in different ways, but all have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence and the growth of rowing at every level.

“From Olympic and Paralympic success to leadership, innovation and advocacy, their impact has been felt across generations of athletes, coaches and administrators. Rowing Australia is proud to recognise their contribution through these nominations.”

Rowing Australia President, Stephen Donnelley, said the nominees represent the very best of the sport’s values and history.

“These three individuals have not only achieved at the highest levels of our sport but have given back to rowing in ways that have strengthened its foundations for the future.

“Life Membership is the highest honour we can bestow, and it is fitting that Tim, Kathryn and Colin are recognised for the lasting impact they have had on rowing in this country and internationally.”

At the Rowing Australia AGM held this evening, outgoing Board Member and Deputy Chair Ben Dodwell OLY was acknowledged for his service to the sport. Serving as Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Nominations Committee, he is recognised for his considerable contribution to the sport for almost a decade, across a crucial time in the sport and the growth of the organisation.

Rowing Australia congratulates Stephen Handley OAM OLY who was elected to the Rowing Australia Board, after serving on the Rowing NSW Board for 21 years and as Deputy-Chair since 2017, most recently serving as the Councillor for NSW on the Rowing Australia Council.
